To distinguish a female crayfish from a male crayfish based on an external examination, look underneath the crayfish at the swimmerets. Male crayfish have two pair of modified swimmerets that are white-tipped and lay between the last pair of walking legs. Females have longer, leaner looking swimmerets for hold ing eggs.
