Traditionally, there were only four: Beijing, Nanjing, Luoyang, and Chang'an (Xi'an)
However, due to archaeological evidence from the 1920s, three more were added: Kaifeng, Hangzhou, and Anyang.
Note: In 2004, the China Ancient Capital Society added Zhengzhou, due to evidence from the Shang Dynasty found there.
