Shading instead of dots (22 posts)

    Hey, David.

Hope you had a good weekend.

Do you think it will ever be possible to have shading as an option rather than dots for creating games? In your country games you used shading to indicate the country. You used dots for the city games. I would like to be able to use shading similar to your country games. Sometimes it is easier to see what needs to be pointed out when it is shaded if it is really small. The dots cover up the little places like Brunei or Bahrain, for example.

    What do you think?

    Hi famisamis,

my weekend was excellent. It passed a tad too quickly in my opinion, but I hear that’s a common feeling :)

I definitely see your point and would very much like to oblige you and the other members with those capabilities.

However, it’s quite tricky. It could be done for the maps I guess but I haven’t really thought out a good “creators interface” for it yet. One of the things I like about the “game creation module” as it stands right now, is the rather simple interface. Too busy interface would only be counter productive and not work well for the site I think.

That said, I’m continuously thinking about cool features to come for the site, so these and other suggestions are very much appreciated. So keep them coming please.

yeah good idea but how about instead of a blue dot we can use a picture.

I think we'd all like to see something like this, but it might be beyond the realm of the possible (or at least beyond the realm of what we can reasonably expect in a short time): it would be a very complicated undertaking, I'm guessing.

But as a short-term and only partial solution, would it be possible to have a grid system?

What I mean, is that for people who like to put in pictures of faces, artwork and such, could there be pre-set grids of various number?

    For example, a 5x4 grid, a 3x4 grid, a 4x2 grid, and so on.

If there were several such grids, they could be selected (like the default maps for the continents) from a menu.

The game author could then put pictures into each square on the grid, and assign a clue for each.

I don't know how this would have to be structured: most ideally, each pic could be loaded (perhaps dragged into the grid) individually and it would automatically resize when you did this.

More likely, you'd have to download a pre-made template, resize the pictures in an image editor, and then save and upload the whole onto the appropriate grid.

In either case, the entirety of each grid square would be the "button". Unused squares would be like unused dots: they don't make it to the game as clickable.

Not sure if even this is too much to ask for: it certainly falls far short of what Famisamis and Brice are asking for, but it might solve some of the problems.

So I guess this means that the games that do exist without dots right now (for example, States of the USA, or Countries of Africa), are not created by users of the site, or at least not using the game-creating interface provided by the site?

    Yes, that's right.

These games were the original games of the site, "hand-crafted" by David, even before there was an interface for user-created games.

I think David would put in a feature to allow users to make such games, if it were easily possible.

But I don't think it would even be close to easy.

I think many users have adapted well to the dot interface, and there are many good games here made with it.

David, this site is amazing! Thank you for coming up with this idea! Do you think you'll be able to give us the ability to create quizzes without dots. I really love the shading!!! This summer would be great since I'll have time without having to worry about grading or planning!

Also, I was trying to put up accent marks and it was not letting me. Even when I typed it elsewhere and then copy-paste it, the word would be pasted without the letter with the accent mark. Is there any way I could do that. I'm a first year Spanish teacher and I'd love to create some quizzes for my students (for 2009-2010 academic year) with words that include accent marks. Is there any way that I could do that?

    @Taylor-Roman
I always have trouble copying-pasting because sometimes it simply doesnt work. On the other hand, when it does work, in my case accents are correctly pasted. Have you tried copying pasting from a webpage ? if you see some of my games, i also have arabic , chinese and hebrew characters. I don't think it is a problem inerent to PG. some investigation is needed

@ hfgxg - for some games, yes, it might be. But as David explained five years ago it's not possible on this site.

nah, david didn't say it's not possible, he said it would be extremely difficult and probably counter productive. and, since it originally came up 5 years ago, i'm guessing that in the intererim since, he's decided it well and TRULY isn't possible. ;) (technicalities, technicalities.)

David is lucky he is the only one to have them shaded.

I think we're the lucky ones that David has created this site and lets us use it.

I think the technical difficulties of allowing shading are just too much for him to do. Maybe he could have done it if he spent tons of time doing it, but then we probably wouldn't have groups, the tournaments, dozens of bug fixes and so on.

But that said, I still think it is too much technically (and maybe financially) for one guy working alone in his spare time. Especially the idea that you could take any background and do it.

Maybe he could "open up" the same maps he used (Africa, Asia, etc.), but what would that get us? Just more and more clones of David's original games? We get plenty of that already.

So, as much as I'd LIKE to see this happen, I just don't see it as being likely to happen on a free site like this. Just too hard to make it happen.

But I do like the site as it is, and I know David will make some other improvements over time.

And I thank him for that.

Agree very warmly with everything you say, Tickman ! It's important to remember that this is a free site - and a wonderful one.

I think you're quite right too about the inadvisability of opening up existing shaded games as functioning backgrounds (even it it's technically straightforward). It's a safe bet that we'd get yet more endless repetitions of US State Capitals, Countries of Europe and so on - and we've more than enough of those already.

I join you in thanking David for what we *do* have !

Agreed. If it David ever decides to do it, my cousin is a software developer.

Well, we can always hope. I think that something like this will be available eventually. I know that David is interested in the idea, and that if he can come up with a workable game-making engine, he will add it to PG.

    So, someday...

Just not today. Or tomorrow. Or the next day. Or the day after that.

It would be a nice thing to have, but do be aware that it will take a lot of work. When and if it ever comes, be very appreciative of David's work (as we all are already for this site in general.) As hfgxg says, it should be worth giving him a nod.

    @ilikepie:

David is always open to suggestions.

Yeah, we know what you meant.

Anyway, it doesn't matter. The new update is almost here.

You can make games with shading instead of dots.
