My Top 5 Countries, besides the US which I am from, is:
1 Britain: I love everything about this country
2 Australia: I am fascinated with the nature and wild-life here
3 Greece: Love the islands, coastline and history
4 France: The culture and cities
5 Spain: An attractive country and interesting people -
1. Denmark-responsible hard working, friendly people and a beautiful country.
2. Italy - the people, the food and a country full of art and antiquities.
3. Poland - they kept their wits about themselves through rough times and their customs and faith still prevail. They have given the world Chopin, Pope John Paul and the men of Solidarity.
4. Canada - a country of vast beauty and natural resources. Its citizens take great pleasure in keeping their country clean from trash so others may enjoy the surroundings.
5. Austria - the greenest land on earth. The hills definitely are alive with beauty and the sound of music because composers and musicians have been its legacy for centuries. For 3 years it was once my home away from home.
Years ago this list might have been different and included the USA which is certainly a great place to live and prosper, a country of diverse beauty, a melting pot of many nationalities where dreams can be fulfilled and realized with hard work and ingenuity. Unfortunately, it can't keep its nose out of everyone's internal affairs. -
From the point of view of Australian living in Brighton (UK), my favourite five countries so far visited are:
1. China (one of my areas of study; fascinating places to visit; great people; endlessly interesting; great food)
2. Vietnam (most of the above; not an area of study, but really fantastic people and cuisine)
3. Turkey (my favourite European country - has everything; fantastiscally dynamic and interesting place)
4. Laos (great people; absolutely stunning landscapes)
5. Norway (my favourite conference country! I've good friends there, and the Norwegians have a wonderful balance between work and life; beautiful country as well). Then again, there are those countries I would really like to visit: Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bhutan, Nepal ...
-
1. Brazil (extremely friendly people, beautiful country, vibrant arts, fascinating history and a lovely language). Living in Brazil was at times heartbreaking, but always stimulating.
2. Costa Rica (no resources squandered on military parades but instead invested in social welfare; also the natural beauty of the country and gallo pinto).
3. Japan (Kenzaburo Oë, Akira Kurosawa, Yasujiro Ozu; stimulating like Brazil, but so different). -
Top societies
1.Denmark - high sentimental intelligence,happy people.
1.Sweden - world lost the opportunity of the 'Fantastic Voyage'
but i think Sweden is having it and reflects it.
2.Australia - Open minds,fresh people,new rules.
4.Japan - gives and of course receives always the best.
5.Canada and U.S.A - hope next 8+ years will be on the top of

Canada is my country, but here are the rest:
1) United States of America - Free, strong, prosperous, beautiful, the city on a hill to the world. First country to build itself on Enlightenment beliefs backed by a constitution. God bless America!
2) United Kingdom - Infinitely impressive history, including WWI and WWII, redefined imperialism and left East Africa, India, Hong Kong, North America and Australia immeasurably better than they were before.
3) Poland - Allied with Thatcher, Reagan and most importantly the Pope to kill communism in Poland, and spark the collapse of the Evil Empire. Strong Catholic tradition gives Poles a solid identity.
4) Republic of China (Taiwan) (yes it's a real country!) - defies the autocratic behemoth that is the People's Republic of China, and has maintained a better economy and much freer society than its sibling. A force for democracy.
5) Israel - a bulwark against Islamism, Arabism, and other corrosive anti-democratic ideologies. Founded as a Jewish state, it has remained the most accepting state in the Middle East. -
My five are:
1)china-very beautiful land, beautiful people, and of course the wall of china
2)France, once again beautiful people, places, and absolutely love their language
3)Syria- Awesome scenery, and just overall cool place
4)Australia- Lots of animals, pretty area around around you overall and i love their accents
5)Last but no least Canada-people seem really happy up there -
of course Brazil, my country, is the country I love the most. We are friendly, we have a beautiful country, beautiful landscapes and beautiful cities (Rio, Recife, Curitiba, Salvador)
but besides Brazil here comes in order the country i like the most:
1) Canada - its a very big country, rich, beautiful nature and beautiful people
2) South Africa - i love the 'diverse' thing. i really think cape town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. South africa has what you're looking. savana, beaches, surf..
3) USA - i love US (excluding its Politics, that i hate, as 99% of human beings that doesnt reside in the US)i love the language, i love the landscape, miami, hawaii.. wooooo
4) Romania - i don't know why i like so much this country. maybe its because of his drakula, castles, dragons etc culture. who knows.
5) France - J'adore Français - what a charmful language!!!!unfortunately i cannot speak it, but i'd tried several time. Paris is not described by words, but feeling. i have been in paris in 1999, when i was 8 and i remember that paris was the European city i liked the most. hope be back soon.thank u

2. Austria - as RonaldDerGrosse already mentioned.... beautiful green country, fantastic mountains, unbelievable good food, great culture

4. Italy - Love the feeling and listening to the people (even though i do not speak italian too much). I love the emotions in almost everything in italy... everything seems to contain it...the paintings, the music, the food....
5. Germany - Totally underestimated for its beauty. Beautiful sights, absolutely great food, lots of culture. In most parts you find very friendly people. (only negative: in some areas people are no all friendly ;-) )

Great question!
According to the home-place rules, I have to rule out England and China (although they are both great and beautiful in many many ways... and, like all countries, they also have their downsides). My top five today are...
1) New Zealand (spectacular scenery, native folk who are genuinely friendly towards foreigners... and Queenstown - perhaps the adrenalin capital of the world!)
2) Thailand (scenery, people and very happy fellow tourists)
3) Brazil (scenery, people, surf, - and diversity on all counts!)
4) Venezuela (scenery, people, flora and coastline)
5) In joint fifth are a number of countries I've visited, travelled through or lived in (where the people and scenery were beautiful and I have vowed to return to one day!)... too many to list... the world truly is a wonderful place, despite the best efforts of our leaders to mess things up! I've deliberately left out Europe coz, although I know it well and there are many great choices, I only have 5!
5)Ignore the above paragraph, I've decided to nominate Mongolia! Incredible and relatively unknown country which everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime! -

The United States is my first, of course, but it is my country, so I'm pretty sure it doesn't count.
1.) Rome, because is it politically the father and mentor of the United States.
2.) Ireland, because I sympathize with a struggle for freedom. It is particularly difficult not to sympathize with any cause that is expressed as beautifully as the Irish present their cause in their songs and artwork.
3.) Pre 1945 Germany, because of their admirable fight against communism.
4.) France, because of the inspiring political history as well as support for the U.S. during some of our earlier, more important wars.
5.) Serbia, for reasons I will not state. -

Since the question mentions FUTURE, I'm giving a somewhat different take by focusing on those countries where the POTENTIAL exists for great positive global impact if that which is best about them takes precedence. Limiting this to 5 is mighty tough though.
Clearly my own US ranks very high on the potential category, and would likely be in the top 5, though not number 1.
1) China - What's not to hope about the most populous country, with well educated youth, if they can appropriately address the environmental crisis looming by virtue of their tremendous upward mobility. Though the leaders are self-serving and often brutal, they also show tremendous savvy at times.
2) Iran - In the heart of the Middle East, with among the best educated youth of that region, the fate of us all may depend largely on where this nation is headed. The current unrest could go very badly, and yet the positive potential is also exciting.
3) India - Projected to become more populous than China, there is little denying the huge global impact this extraordinarily diverse mass of humanity will have. Let's hope the population explosion there slows. And thank you, India, for your cuisine - Yum!
4) Liberia - Can Africa's first democratically elected woman leader provide a more positive template for other African nations to follow, and turn the tide on human rights atrocities all too common on this beautiful continent?
5) Brazil - Will the lungs of the world be kept in tact along with this nation's vibrant people and culture? How many unique species there can yet be saved? And shout outs as well to the sensible and happy people of Denmark, the Netherlands, and Nicaragua (where I posed for my new avatar), as well as to good people from every corner of the world who help our planet be better than it would without them.
