Record Low + Improvement

Post Information Posted: 2006-12-18 08:27:33 #

I just finished playing the African Capitals game at what felt like a record low. 35% or in that neighbourhood. :)

Anyway, it strikes me that nearly all I missed, and even some I got right on the first try would really have been more informative if it could have the Country name attached to it in the hint. I want to be able to learn from this and just knowing the capitals and not knowing the countries that good is not a full learning experience if you see what I mean.

I know now where Ogadougou is on the map, but what country was it capital of now again :)

Not a big thing but still an improvement I would think.... Thanks.

Just learn the African Countries map as well. :-)
If you learn both of them it gets easy after a while to remember.

It actually helpes me a lot to learn the countries map first. It makes it easier to learn the Capitals if I know the country too. Same thing on all Capitals maps for me.

I've been doing what Pelle suggested. I learn the countries first then go to the cities. I will go back and forth until I get it and also to review.

But, I do agree with Lisa that it would be helpful it was mentioned in the hint. Or maybe even when you get the answer right if it popped up briefly with the capital name together with the country name. This wouldn't be so much a part of helping you better your score but of improving your knowledge of the geography itself.

Learning the two apart from each other doesn't help build the connection as strongly in your memory, well at least for me, personally. If I try to recall where Maputo is, I know it's way down in the Southern tip of Africa...next to Mbabane. But, I really struggle to remember the countries they belong to.

The game is still awesome, though, because two weeks ago I never would be able to tell you where Mozambique and Swaziland were let alone even recognize that Mbabane and Maputo were cities in the world and capitals of African countries.

Thanks to David for all his hard work in creating such a great toy.

I agree that learning the capitals and countries apart doesn't build a strong link between them. Especially when you're not intentionally busy with doing that but trying to improve your time. Personally though I sometimes not try to get a fast time but to match every country with it's capital (doing the country map) and that sort of little games.

And I can only agree with famisamis on the fact that a few weeks ago I wouldn't have recognised most of the things I know now about all the countries.

I think that if you had said to me that Maputo was some kind of rare horn-beetle and that Mbabane was the ceremonial war leader of somekind of bushtribe I would also have believed you.
