Site suggestions: Marginalia

A couple of suggestions involving “marginal” areas of the site:

1) I kind of liked the old feature that showed the most recently-set ATHs and the games they were associated with. Maybe I’m the only one who misses this, but I’d like to see it back. There seems to be room in the margin for it on the main page, game page or Leaderboard/Tourney page. The latter seems like the best match as this is where the competitive speedsters hang out.

2) I’d also like to see the Top 5 Contributors section expanded to top 10 or15. There seems to be room for the expanded version on Community, Main or Games pages, depending on where Recent ATHs are ;-) This would be especially useful now that you can view a player’s games in the game view mode and sort through their past games fairly easily. This would be a good way for people to find games from some of the more productive authors who have so far gotten less exposure. After all, there have only ever been 6 names to appear in the top 5. I’d like to see the wider list (in part) so that I can see if I’ve been missing anything. The number of games is very large now, and I think this would be very useful to many people.

David: as always, your work is greatly appreciated, and the site is still very good even if you don't make these changes.

These sound good. Especially the top 10 (or 15) thing.

I'm no challenge to setting the ATH in any game, so that's not as important to me. But I guess it would be interesting to see as a sort of spectator sport.

David has now restored the "latest records broken" feature on the main page.

Great!

Thanks, David!

Maybe it would be a good idea to have the weekly most played user-created games as well. As it is now it is always (almost) the same games in the weekly most played list (no wonder, these are probably the best games).

Yes - Niklas idea would be insteresting. It would probably need to exclude the tournament games of the week also though.

Ditto on Niklas' and Doffa's comments.

I think anything that aids site navigation is a good thing, and it helps bring people in.

To that end, pointers to well-played games is great. Expanding that list specifically to user-created games gives people the idea that "I could make games, too".

The "latest records broken" (now restored) gives people the challenge: can you do better? That's a great idea.

And the "Top 5 Contributors" does give you a link to almost 1/3 of the games (at this point). A more robust contributors list would give even more.

And (as noted elsewhere), getting game thumbnails back from a search is pure gold...

Could it be possible to build in some kind of replay system for record games? it could be fun to watch the really fast games.

I guess it would take a lot of capacity, recording every game (temporarily, until you know if it is a record or not).
Here are some fast games:

I think Thomsiboms posted something about it here in the forum.
