Taking the Pledge (Clock games)

Post Information Posted: 2007-06-11 15:42:10 #

OK. I am taking the pledge. In this case, the pledge to forgo publish a large number of games at one time, so that I will not crowd out other people's games.

Specifically, I promise to not post more than 2 games a day, and to try to avoid having more than 3 of my games on the homepage at any one time.

I am doing this now because I have a large series of games ready to go. These are math games based on a simple clock background, intended mainly for children (or people who pride themselves on their speed).

There are, in fact about 20 ready to go: 13 multiplication games (0-12), squares, cubes, powers of 10 and a couple of others.

In return for me not flooding the system, I ask of others not to post similar games for awhile. This is partly to avoid duplications and partly to prevent others from getting upset that there are too many "math clock" games, in the same way that some people thought there were too many baseball games a while back. (Yeah, I contributed 2 of those games -- sorry for my role in the overkill).

I would urge everyone to exercise similar restraint in adding games, but that could really constitute a whole different discussion. Suffice it to say that most people would prefer that their games get a certain residency on the homepage and not simply be washed away in a flood of games by 1 or 2 authors.

Hi, tickman. I haven't read all the posts on this issue, but I do think there are a couple of fundamental flaws to the argument and, I suppose, therefore to the site.

Let's say I prepared a series of 20 games on a specific subject; I'd like to try to group them without handing someone the opportunity to clamber onto the popularity bandwagon (one says wishfully)with duplicates or near duplicates. I think key to this would be to tidy up the "Related Games" part of a game's screen. If the Related Games were really related and not a lucky dip, you could have an option when posting the entire 20 games in one go of just having 2 or 3 show on the homepage without the fear of losing the rest to the caverns of the unknown, or someone else quickly filling in the obvious gaps (of files you have ready to post) because of posting restrictions. The other knock-on effect is that when criticized posters tend to leave series incomplete.

Regarding Related Games I'd have two sections there: Related and Lucky Dip, side by side.

Bix21:

Yeah, there is that problem with the architecture of the site. But David has limitations in what he can do.

More importantly, we all see the opportunities for improving the site very differently.

All we can do is make suggestions, and comment on the suggestions of others. Some will make the grade, others won't.

But really, what I had thought might happen, didn't. Yes, with the baseball games, there were a few that were done by a second author. And without stepping on the original author's toes, as far as I can see.

With the clock games, there were also some by a second author. Kind of encouraged by me, really.

So I go ahead with the clocks, a couple at a time. I'm into subtraction right now. Division later. That will more or less complete what I am doing. Sure, I could do them all at once, but I don't want to do that for other reasons:

1) I don't want to crowd out other games with all clocks.

2) There are other games I want to make.

I could do the rest of the clocks in one fell swoop and be done with it and then do my other games, but I just wouldn't feel right about doing it like that.

And some of this is why I made the game of "games you can make"

http://www.purposegames.com/game/2436/info

I had ideas I couldn't keep up with, and wanted to give others encouragement to make some games, especially those who haven't made games before.

And "related games" and "lucky dip" is a very good concept. Hard to realize at a practical level, I would guess. I would like to see it, though. Very much so.

I should have said more directly:

I liked the other clock games. They were very well done, and changed the way I approached backgrounds to my later clock games, and to other games. They were games that I wouldn't have thought of, or wouldn't have gotten to for quite some time.

I should also say that the "second author" for clock games is equestenebrarum, one of the site's best authors, and someone I hold in very high regard.
