I responded to your question on the community page. I repeat it here to make sure it finds you.

You make friends by participating. You can get 'formal' friends by inviting them (visit someones profile and click on the "add as friend' link under the avatar).

Nods can be harder to get. Someone has to know who you are first, and then visit your profile and give the nod.

Nods are generally given to friends, or to people who are notable players (e.g., Tournament speedsters), people who offer advice or help to others, people who participate well in community page discussion or people who make games that others like. As you make friends, nods are likely to follow.

This all takes time.

As far as groups are concerned, most groups don't require invitations to join. Public groups are free for all, and there are many of those. Go to the Groups page, find public groups you are interested in, and click on the Icons. A page will come up with an open invitation to join. Click on it, and you're in.

If you click on a private group, you'll see a feature where you can apply to join. The administrator will then decide whether or not to let you in.

Invite-only groups are even more exclusive, and don't have a feature like that, but you can still contact the group administrator in his/her message board and ask if you can join.

I suggest you join some public groups, especially if there are groups that appeal to your interests. (If there are none yet, perhaps you should make one). Play the group tournies, get acquainted with people on those groups, and if you find people with similar interests, leave messages on their message boards so they know who you are. Add some people as friends, most will accept.

I see you're new here. Welcome to PuGa.

Good Luck and Good Games.
