I would agree with you entirely about genera because I would have used it without hesitation, but something said "look it up". I was playing scrabble with my sons and I questioned the word "mic" because I always used "mike" and found out how wrong I was.

According to Webster both plurals are accepted. Collegiate Edition. I checked that out before I published that game and decided to use the es ending instead of genera.
