Despite women gaining the vote in 1920, the United States Senate has remained a male dominated institution. Only recently have women begun to be elected to the Senate with any regularity.
Rebecca Ann Latimer Felton (Georgia), the first woman sworn in as a Senator, addressed the Senate on her only day in office: "When the women of the country come in and sit with you, though there may be but very few in the next few years, I pledge you that you will get ability, you will get integrity of purpose, you will get exalted patriotism, and you will get unstinted usefulness." -- Address to the Senate, November 21, 1922
Between Felton's one day term and the election of Nancy Kassebaum from Kansas in 1978, only 3 women served as much as a full term in the US. Senate. Kassebaum was the last woman to begin her time in the Senate as the only woman in that 100-person body. Today there are 17 women in the Senate, still less than 1 in 5, but more than ever before.
