Still need to get that reference right.
Data from here:
The data comes from here:

and each index has a link to someplace else.

What I find most extraordinary about this game is the juxtaposition between Congo (lowest energy intensity) and Democratic Republic of Congo (highest energy intensity). How is that two neighbours, in many respects quite similar, are polar opposites when it comes to energy use? A nod for anyone who can answer this!

Thanks for the very nice map, tickman and slaaty! Nice game! *****
If you had chosen coffe consumption, Finland is ahead of Sweden... And I believe Swedes eat more bananas than any other people.

@ ashgabat:
Ecuador may be the largest exporter of bananas (I haven't looked up figures for that), but currently ranks about 5th in banana production:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bananas#Trade
There are four possilbe #1 rankings for any commodity: #1 producer, #1 exporter, #1 consumer and #1 importer.
So a country may be the #1 producer, but if it consumes most of its production, it doesn't export. It may even import. Thus, India consumes most of its bananas. Ecuador exports most of its bananas.
As for Thailand and rice:
Not in this game: it only goes to the letter "I"
Oh yeah, another game is coming...

Ecuador is first in Bananas and Thailand is rice.

let me redo that first comment. It should read:
Data from here:

The map comes from here originally:

and has a GNU Free Documentation License (GPL).

Special thanks to Slaaty, who modified the map and provided me the ancestor of the version I use here.

Note about the rankings:
They come from a variety of sources, so accuracy may vary for a number of reasons:
1) Many of these items are difficult to measure.
2) A few items may be somewhat subjective in nature, and subject to bias (intentional or not).
3) Many of these things change over time. By the time they are compiled and published, they may have changed.
4) Countries don't always cooperateor report honestly (or at all). This can change rankings.

I must note that the astronomical significance of some of these is more established than that of others. Of course we can't ask the builders: they're all dead.

Nice to see my country (Costa Rica) featured for something positive :) Yes, most of those things are very subjective but it's still a nice try and a good game to play :)
