The West Indies (Caribbean, Simple Version

EC created by tickman, 2 years ago in Geography

Find major island groupings of the West Indies in and near the Carribean. Terminology varies among sources. Numbered discussion points address some of that in the game comments section (and will be part of the next game.…).Base map by user FAR at Wikimedia/Wikipedia, extensively modified by me.

Excellent game- for me, this has always been a confusing region with confusing terminology- the map & notes really clarify

Discussion points:

1) A number of small islands and archipelagos near the Central American mainland are not shown in this game. They are not considered to be part of any of the groupings shown.

2) The Cayman islands are sometimes included among the islands of the Greater Antilles, and sometimes excluded. I have chosen to include them.

3) The Florida Keys are geologically part of Florida, and are not included in any of these groupings.

4) Geographically, the Turks and Caicos Islands are part of the Bahamas group. The division shown here is primarily is political.

5) Isla Aves is sometimes considered part of the Leeward Islands; more for convenience than because of Geography. I have excluded it here.

6) The Island of Dominica may be considered to be either the Southernmost of the Leeward Islands or the Northernmost of the Windward Islands. I have included it in both groups, which is not generally done.

7) Barbados may be included with or excluded from the Windward Islands. I have chosen to show that ambiguity by using the dashed orange boundary.

8) Trinidad and Tobago are variously included with or excluded from the Windward Islands. I have chosen to show that by using the dashed orange boundary.

9) Isla Margarita is not generally considered part of the Venezuelan Archipelago, nor of the Leeward Antilles.

10) (Unnumbered point): The definition of what constitutes the WIndward and Leeward Islands varies depending on language. I have chosen the English definition (or one of them, anyway). For more information on this topic see:
