The most "PROMINENT" mountains of the world

created by Wentu, 4 years ago in Geography

Prominence is an important but exotic concept.
Suppose that the sea level rises to the lowest level at which a peak becomes the highest point on an island. The prominence of that peak is the height of that island. These are the mountains with the highest prominence

The ' col ' between Mt McKinley and Aconcagua is at Rivas in Nicaragua

Here is a Wikipedia explanation and list of mountains by prominence.

I got the gist of it from Wentu's explanation, but not the full understanding. It's still rather counterintuitive to take away any height from Denali (aka McKinley) based on Aconcagua (many thousands of km away) being its "parent", but OK it's only a small subtraction - 56 m. I guess that means a surface route can be traced from Denali to Aconcagua which never dips below 56 m. I wonder where that "col" is?

I think there should be yet another definition of prominence which really looks at how much a peak stands above its "immediate" surroundings. My own local Mount Rainier (aka Tahoma), would surely be in the top 10 in the world by such a measure. We who live near it know how enormous it is.

Nonetheless, this measure of prominence is a far cry superior to simply measuring height above sea level. Cool game, Wentu. 5*!

Remember that prominence is the true measure of the importance of a mountain with respect to its surroundings. If I pile some rocks some meters away from Mount Everest peak I have not created the second highest peak in the world because that pile has a very low prominence.

Remember the prominence !
