Oh! Thanks for the explanation.

@ PETO:

I used the background as I found it.

I think the problem is dual here.

1) The color scale runs "backward" high temp (50000K) is on the left, and low temp (5000 K). The Hertzsprung-Russell diagram is sort of "backwards" in that way. We expect low temp at the left.

2) We tend to think of blue as "cool" and red as "hot". That certainly is counter-intuitive. For us, red is hot (fire) and blue is cool (water). But for stars, blue is hot and red is cool. The blue stars have the hotter surface temps, the red have cooler surface temps.

And in the H-R diagram, reds are more to the right end and the blue more to the blue end. So star color does correspond to the background. More or less, that is: there's not really a yellow zone...

I do get your point. It might be better if the background color shift were more diagonal (upper left to lower right), or a more complex thing with an irregular fade.

But as I say, I used the background as I found it -- it is beyond my skill to make such a modification (and I probably do not have the right software to do that, anyway....)

Reversing the red and blue on the background would better reflect the change in temperature... as it is the blue is behind the hotter stars and red behind the cooler stars.

nicely detailed schema!

And there is yet a 3rd version of this diagram here at PG: a different rendering entirely, and a simpler game than the other two.

That game is by Heateh, and is here:

Two messages down, you can find the URL for the second of the three H-R diagaram games.

Another nice game. Stars have always been an interest to me.

There are many renderings of the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram. A game at PG featuring a more "traditional" version is here:
