Red (rosso corsa) is originally the colour of Italian race cars, in Britain it is green (british racing green), Germany has silver (hence the nickname 'silver arrows' for race cars from Mercedes and Auto Union among others, France has blue (the colour you usually see on a Bugatti) etc.
Today it is not that common on race cars anymore, I guess sponsors wants 'their' colours on the cars.
