A note on Lenin's position on national self-determination:

National self-determination was supported within whichever class context, but not if it went against progress in the class struggle. For example, Finland and Poland were allowed capitalist independence only because Soviet Russia could not militarily hold them, otherwise they would have been allowed only the choices of either being separate soviet states or to unite with Soviet Russia. Lenin used as precedent to this the position taken by Marx and Engels with relation to the 1848 Revolutions when the choice was between the bourgeoisie and feudalism: they supported independence of Poland against feudal Tsarist Russia, but opposed the use of Czech nationalism in the service of feudalism against the bourgeois-democratic Austria-Hungarian Revolution.

During the Stalinist period there was no real right to secession, the rights of minority nations were trampled on, and numerous minorities were subject to forced population transfers and killings.
As part of the socialist struggle against Stalinism, Trotsky advocated the independence of a Soviet Ukraine from the USSR, while continuing to oppose any form of capitalist independence.
