LOUISIANA:
17 Micropolitan Areas
8 Metropolitan Areas

(Sorry Lafayette is split into 2 Metro areas, so don't say there's 9 Metro areas. The 19th game in the Metro/Micro Series!

It is a bit confusing, but I guess you are correct.

I think that this map is correct, and that the confusion comes from the fact that this is just the way the definitions are set up.

See:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lafayette-Acadiana,_LA_CSA

and

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Martin_Parish,_Louisiana

The areas follow county (or in this case, Parish) lines. The Lafayette Metropolitan area includes Lafayette Parish, and the adjacent St. Martin Parish.

What is unusual is that St. Martin is a discontiguous parish, with 2 areas separated by a different parish (Iberia). But even though the southern section is not as densely populated as the northern part, it is still counted in the Metro area.

Probably it is done this way because w/o use of some kind of existing boundary, the task of defining the areas would become much more difficult.

I get all of the info from one of the websites by the Census, so I just take the info that is gives and put it on a map! I apologize if it's wrong! I'll check again to make sure I got it right, but I've checked it a couple times already, but either way I'll check it again!

Lafayette's actually a bit more to the west. What is labeled as the southern part of the Lafayette metro area is actually mainly uninhabited swampland in St. Martin parish.
