I think the purchase was actually 1867.
From what I've read, the 99.9 year lease is a myth, but believed by some in Russia (along with other myths, some of which are sublimely ridiculous). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaska_purchase
But the main point is that Russia was over-extended in its empire, but looking to keep Alaska out of British hands, as the two countries were not on good terms.

I usually tell my students that the purchase of Alaska was one of the worst mistakes in history. $7.2 million... Even in 1867, it wasn't much. But what I didn't know, was that Russia had written in the contract to claim it for 99,9 years and an option for an additional 29.9 years. If nothing was done by then, USA would have it permanently. Now, with Klondyke and the oil in mind, why didn't Russia do anything? I mean 1898 is long before the chaos of 1917? Can anyone straighten this up for me?
