I'm pretty sure bostongopher is on to something there. There aren't the names I've learned.

I dont think these country names are in mandarin.
I speak mandarin and judging by the pin yin, it isn't right. Unless you use a different form to alphabetize the normal characters used in the chinese language, i believe that the nation names are wrong.
For example, in Pin Yin, or romanized alphabetical chinese, America would be Mei Guo and Japan would be Ri Ben and such.

You're both correct! This is "amoy" a regional dialect also known as "hokkien", spoken in and around Xiamen (Fujian province).
