If you miss a dot three times the dot turns red, then it is impossible to see against the red background, this could be why it disappeared, at least that is what happened to me the first time I played it.

Ronald:
Don't know why Vietnam showed up empty. I rewrote the answer, and it works fine now, but I can't tell what the difference was.
The Black Hills are a bit off-center, the NW part of the dot just clipping the right location (I think). That's a function of dot crowding in that region. Otherwise, Yellowstone and BH would overlap a lot. If I do a USA by colors, there'll be more room to get things in right. I may also go to a smaller color dot next to the blue dot.

I now see the reason for the larger dot. Vietnam has an empty red dot but I can't think of anything that would go with it. Black Hills might be a bit too far south.

I wasn't going to publish this at first, but it is sort of a tutor for a "missing map" game (or series of games) I have in mind.
Comments encouraged for both this game and its mapless companion.
Thanks to all my friends who have already commented on this. You've made some good suggestions that I may use in the future, and a few I've used here.

Niklas:
That makes sense. Thanks for the input. If I do this kind of thing again, I'll do something to the dot (say, a pattern) to prevent that.
