So LSU and Auburn are among the "most famous" universities? What criteria exactly did you use to select there?

I am very impressed with David's wizardry with gamesmanship. In this game there are several universities where the location shown are not the actual locations. I did an overlay to make sure I was right (and I was).

Rice and Rochester are better known than say, Nebraska and Ohio State? In the music or vegetable community, maybe.
And well-known overall? For a geographic challenge, I can understand not listing only one state-named school in a state (e.g., Nebraska), so what about Slippery Rock (not a big school, but a pretty well known name) or Bryn Mawr.
