They are actually two lobes of the same lake.
The Huron Lobe and the Michigan Lobe are at the same elevation and are connected by the 120-foot-deep Mackinac Strait, also at the same elevation. The strait is 3.6 to 5 miles wide.
So, hydrologically they are considered to be one lake.

And now I'm off to get that record! :-)

Officially Lake Michigan and Lake Huron are considered two separate lakes. But, like you said, some sources group them together as one. Where I'm from it would ruffle a lot of feathers to consider them as one lake, there are FIVE Great Lakes! :o)

I think it makes sense to cover them with one dot for your game, though, since it's so crowded in that area.

Thank you famisamis! The only thing that could be questioned is whether Lake Michigan-Huron is one or two lakes, it all depends on which source you go by. By choosing to have them as one there is one less dot in an already crowded area.
