There were two Laconias WWI off Ireland and WWII off Africa. The WWII sinking was known as the Laconia Incident. The waters were shark infested. The German sub was picking up survivors and was strafed by US planes. It had to dive quickly and lost German crew members. From then on Doenitz ordered a "take no survivor" order.
