what about the battles around Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania, VA there's alot of them there?
==============
A couple of things:
First, I only had a limited list of double-named battles to work with. I would've liked to have had more, but I had what I had.
Second, when you're right you're right. There were a lot of battles in Northern Virginia. The war went on in lots of places (the naval war was global, there was fighting in New Mexico, etc.), but half the war (or more) was fought in a very small area of Virginia. That makes it impossible to address them all: the dots would be on top of each other.
The battles you mention (especially Fredericksburg) were important enough that if I'd had the split name information, I'd have bumped some lesser battle to put it in. But again, so many big battles in such a small area.
Thanks for your comment.

Niklas:
Thanks for the link.
True, most battles are given the US name, not the CS name. At least in the most common histories. The two most commonly known by both names are 1st & 2nd Bull Run (AKA 1st and 2nd Manassas). The Union named battle "Pittsburg Landing" is little known, as the Confederate name "Shiloh" is mostly used. Probably the most prominent example of that.
And yes, even to this day, the battles are known by different names in different places. People can't even agree on the name of the war, much less the battles.

This is where I found most of the info for my game (#822):

I don't think it says, but I guess it's union names, winners tend to write the history...

By the way, this very useful map is by the USA Department of Interior, and in the public domain. The original has all 50 states. I cut it down for the game.
I found it at:

If anyone knows of other specific examples of different civil war battle names, please let me know: this game and its companion could use more dots. If I get a few more, I will change them and reset the high scores.
What these games really need are dots in areas other than the Virginia/Maryland border region.
A appreciate any help.
